Animals of Our Region

Many iconic Australian animals such as the frilled-neck lizard, eastern grey kangaroo, koala, Irwin’s turtle, black flying fox and the northern hairy nosed wombat are native to the Burdekin dry tropics region.

NQ Dry Tropics has led a range of initiatives to help protect native wildlife. Some of these include:

  • Promoting recovery the black-throated finch
  • Installing fish passage devices
  • Managing development offset properties to enhance wildlife
  • Helping rural and semi-rural property owners to reduce their impact on native wildlife
  • Encouraging wildlife-friendly revegetation projects
  • Protecting hairy nosed wombat habitat
