Belyando Basin

The Belyando basin is very large, covering just over 35,000 square kilometres.

The land is mostly used for grazing and broad acre cereal cropping. A small part of the land used for conservation purposes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This basin contains seven subcatchments. These are:

Belyando Floodplain

Belyando FloodplainsBelyando Floodplain is a relatively small subcatchment where land use is exclusively grazing.

People use the area for irrigation, stock watering, drinking water, and the cultural and spiritual values of the Jangga Traditional Owners.

 

 

 

 

Carmichael River

Carmichael RiverCarmichael River is a very large subcatchment where land use is predominantly grazing. About 10 per cent of the land area is remnant native cover with minimal use.

The area is home to Nairana National Park in the north-eastern corner of the Carmichael River subcatchment, and Wilanspey Conservation Park, also near the bottom of the subcatchment.

People use the area for stock watering, and the cultural and spiritual values of the Jangga Traditional Owners.

 

 

Fox Creek

Fox CreekFox Creek is a medium sized subcatchment where land use is almost exclusively grazing.

The area is home to the Epping Forest National Park scientific area. The park contains large areas of the endangered regional ecosystems and the sole remaining natural population of Hairy Nose wombat.

People use the area for recreation (swimming), stock watering, drinking water, and the cultural and spiritual values of the Wangan/Jangalingou Traditional Owners.

 

 

Mistake Creek

Mistake CreekMistake Creek is a large subcatchment where the land use is dominated by grazing. However, production forestry and dryland agriculture are also identified as significant land uses.

The area contains part of Nairana National Park in the bottom of the subcatchment; and Narrien Range National Park in the south-west of the subcatchment. Spring-fed creeks are thought to originate in the Narrien Range and to provide a very important source of water in an otherwise dry landscape.

People use this area for stock watering, irrigation, and the cultural and spiritual values of the Wangan/Jangalingou Traditional Owners.

 

Native Companion Creek

Native Companion CreekNative Companion Creek is a large subcatchment where the land use is exclusively grazing.

People use the area for stock watering, and the cultural and spiritual values of the Bidjara Traditional Owners.


 

 

 

Sandy Creek

Sandy CreekSandy Creek is a medium sized subcatchment where land use is dominated by grazing. A small part of the land is used for conservation and minimal use.

People use the area for stock watering, and the cultural and spiritual values of the Bidjara Traditional Owners.

 

 

 

Upper Belyando River

Upper Belyando RiverUpper Belyando River is a large subcatchment where the land use is almost exclusively grazing.

The area is home to the Narrien Range National Park in the north-east of the subcatchment.

Spring-fed creeks are thought to originate in the Narrien Range and to provide a very important source of water in an otherwise dry landscape.

People use them for irrigation, stock watering, farm use, drinking water, and the cultural and spiritual values of the Wangan/Jangalingou and Bidjara Traditional Owners.
