Project Catalyst

NQ Dry Tropics is supporting cane farmers’ involvement in Project Catalyst. The Project is about helping progressive farmers who are developing practices that improve the quality of water leaving farms.

Project Catalyst was born in the Mackay Whitsundays area by natural resource management group Reef Catchments and has expanded into north Queensland with the support of NQ Dry Tropics.

Kids talk turtles with Traditional Owners

3 September 2010

Students around Townsville are learning about the important relationship between Traditional Owners and sea turtles through a series of school presentations called ‘Safeguarding the Gungu (Sea Turtle)’.

NQ Dry Tropics Project Officer, Sam Savage, said the education program teaches kids about the cultural connections Traditional Owners have with the sea.

“Traditional Owners have a long standing relationship with the sea and with sea turtles.”

Delbessie Ready

The Delbessie Agreement is a new arrangement of leasing land in Queensland.

Most grazing properties throughout the state are leased and the leases used to be renewed automatically every 30 years. The Queensland Government wants to reward good landholders by offering longer term leases to those who met environmental and social benchmarks.

In 2007, it signed an agreement with rural lobby group Agforce and the Australian Rainforest Conservation Society on a Hughenden property called Delbessie, cementing a new leasehold strategy.

Our Region

NQ Dry Tropics' management area, the Burdekin Dry Tropics region, is located in north eastern Queensland. Covering an area of approximately 138,000
square kilometres (almost eight per cent of the state), the region is primarily defined by the catchment area of the Burdekin River. The region extends into
marine waters and includes Magnetic Island and the Palm Islands.

About us
