Local swamp an international treasure

2 February 2010 - World Wetlands Day

One man’s swamp is another’s treasure trove.

While some people may think of wetlands as salty, sand fly infested swamps, NQ Dry Tropics is encouraging coastal residents from Balgal Beach to Bowen to take a closer look at the value of their local wetland today in honor of World Wetlands Day.

Lower Burdekin Basin

The Lower Burdekin Basin is relatively small, covering just under 10,000 square kilometres.

The land is mostly used for grazing with about 12 per cent used for intensive agriculture such as irrigated sugar production. Another 9 per cent is used for conservation purposes.
