Coastcare Groups

Volunteer groups in our region do fantastic work looking after our beaches and marine environment, monitoring our flora and fauna and educating the community on best management practice. 

Volunteers are made up of a cross section of community, from experts in particular fields to children to anybody with a keen interest in preserving our coastal and marine environment.

Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare

Alva Sports Recreation and Community Association

Queens Beach Action Group, Bowen

Bowen Coastcare group volunteers seek to identify local environmental problems and work together to achieve practical solutions, tackling problems like dune erosion, loss of native plants and animals, storm water pollution, weeds and control of human access to sensitive areas. Contact Pat Garrod on (07) 4785 1127 or email: patg40@bigpond.net.au.

Reef Check Australia

Reef Check Australia is part of an international non-profit organisation involving the community in monitoring coral reef health. Coral reefs around the world are under enormous pressure from human activities and climate change. Although Australia’s reefs are among the best managed in the world, they are not immune to these threats. Saunders Beach Coastcare Group

The Saunders Beach Coast Care Group along with the ancillary group entitled the Saunders Beach Action Group, has worked successfully with the local council for the development and implementation of various ground works in an effort to create and maintain Saunders Beach as an ecologically sustainable environment The Group’s efforts have included hands-on ground works as well as community forums to help residents understand the sensitive nature of all coastal hind dunes & the environmental ramifications of poor hind-dune management practices.   Contact Peter Mayer on 0417 619 786 or email: peter@allcorp.net.au.

Sea Turtle Foundation

Sea Turtle Foundation is a recently formed not-for-profit company in the process of expansion from a local community group to an internationally recognised sea turtle conservation organisation. Contact Gitte Kragh by email: info@seaturtlefoundation.org.

Townsville Region Bird Observers Club

Bird Observation & Conservation Australia (BOCA) is a national organisation committed to the needs of bird watchers and to the conservation of birds and environmental management.  Founded in 1991, the Townsville branch of BOCA, the Townsville Region Birds Observers Club, has an active membership of 60, some of who have received national recognition for their work in bird conservation.  The members live mainly in the Townsville region and conduct regular bird counts and studies in the local area. Wunjunga Progress Association
