Queens Beach Restoration Work

NQ Dry Tropics and Whitsunday Regional Council are working together on a six-month project to improve Queens Beach in Bowen. The project, which was approved by the Australian Government as part of the Green Corps program, commenced in March.

Access to the beach will be restricted to three specific points.  These three access tracks will be better defined by the installation of bollard fencing along each side. A number of sand ladders are being installed on the tracks and signage will also be used to direct pedestrians to each access point.

Weeds are being removed from more than 7.5 hectares of the area, and the foreshore area is being revegetated using local plant species. This will involve almost two hectares of land and planting of around 6,000 seedlings. These seedlings are grown by volunteers from the Whitsunday Catchment Landcare community centre at Proserpine, and a small nursery at Bowen State School.

Once completed, the works will help to protect the coastal community from the impacts of a storm surge or a potential sea level rise.

This project has been developed by NQ Dry Tropics and Whitsunday Regional Council. Works will be carried out by the Queens Beach Action Group and Green Corps.

Green Corps is an Australian Government youth development and environmental training program for young people aged between 17 and 20 years. Green Corps provides young people with the opportunity to volunteer their time and effort to conserve, preserve and restore Australia’s natural environment and cultural heritage.
