Birriah People develop their own Caring for Country plan
The First Nations approach to managing land and water — ‘Caring for Country’ — is built on a core belief that if you look after Country, Country will look after you.
Birriah has taken the initiative to create their Caring For Country Plan in partnership with NQ Dry Tropics to implement their visions for a healthy country, embedded in cultural heritage. It emphasises the important role of family, community, and inter-generational knowledge in looking after the land and the integration of traditional and modern methods for the preservation of cultural heritage.
The Caring for Country Plan reflects the insights of the Birriah Aboriginal Corporation and its family. Elders and Knowledge Holders were given the opportunity to return to Country to strengthen their spirits and connection to the ancestral land.
Workshops held in 2024, attracted more than 100 participants. Their conversations explored how embracing contemporary technologies and western methods could enhance the preservation and communication of Birriah history — ensuring cultural sites and artefacts were accurately documented, analysed, and safeguarded.
Their vision extends to strengthening the ties that bind their people to their Country, to ensure every step taken on the land is a step in the right direction for future generations.
The Birriah Country Plan will provide ongoing guidance on “how Birriah people want to protect and manage Birriah Country in line with their Cultural Traditions” and increase the capability of Birriah people to manage Country.
