Building resilience across a decade of extension in Einasleigh rangelands
The Climate-Resilient Rangelands project will build on nearly a decade of work to improve the condition and long-term resilience of landscapes in the Einasleigh Uplands near Charters Towers.
The Einasleigh Uplands bioregion, spanning the north-west of the Burdekin Dry Tropics NRM region, is a nationally-listed biodiversity hotspot at risk from threats including pests, weeds, wildfires and grazing pressure, all of which reduce landscape resilience and increase vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.
These threats are often too large and complex for a single landholder to manage and are more effectively addressed through collaborative landscape scale efforts.
Einasleigh or Upper Burdekin landholders will be supported to improve the condition of rangelands, softwood scrubs and wetlands through threat mitigation and adopting best-practice grazing management techniques.
Support for grazing practice change will include infrastructure, such as fencing and off-stream watering points, extension, and education.
Threat mitigation actions will include weed and feral animal control, fire breaks, and controlled burns.
This project is one of three being delivered by NQ Dry Tropics as part of the Queensland Government’s Natural Resource Management Expansion Program.
Delivered in collaboration with Natural Resource Management (NRM) Regions Queensland, the $118m program expands the capacity of regional NRM organisations to deliver on-ground land, water and biodiversity projects across the State.
The other projects NQ Dry Tropics will deliver under this program are Fighting Invasive Species Together and Climate-Ready Coastlines.
The Climate-Resilient Rangelands project is delivered by NQ Dry Tropics through funding from the Queensland Government’s Natural Resource Management Expansion Program.
