Traditional Owners and landholders team up to tackle invasive weeds and pests
Invasive weeds, feral animals, and wildfires are a major threat to the Burdekin region’s agricultural industry and biodiversity.
The Fighting Invasive Species Together project will address these issues by improving the condition and resilience of land and native vegetation at four locations, including on Palm Island and Magnetic Island.
This work will be delivered in collaboration with landholders, land managers, and four Indigenous Ranger groups; MinggaMingga Land and Sea Rangers (Palm Island), Yunbenun Land and Sea Rangers (Magnetic Island), Gudjuda Rangers (Lower Burdekin) and Girringun Rangers.
A range of activities, including Cultural fire and weed and feral animal control, will deliver 26 hectares of improved native vegetation condition, and an additional 2000 hectares of land more resilient to the impacts of wildfires.
This project will build on previous successful NQ Dry Tropics projects that fostered collaboration between landholders and Traditional Owners, and implemented practical solutions using a combination of best available science, local and Traditional knowledge.
Land managers and Rangers will be supported to collaboratively plan, monitor, and deliver project activities to improve Country.
As a co-benefit, the project will build capacity of Land and Sea Ranger groups from across the region to monitor and record vegetation condition and wildfire resilience.
This project is one of three being delivered by NQ Dry Tropics as part of the Queensland Government’s Natural Resource Management Expansion Program.
Delivered in collaboration with Natural Resource Management (NRM) Regions Queensland, the $117.8 million program expands the capacity of regional NRM organisations to deliver on-ground land, water and biodiversity programs across the State.
The other projects NQ Dry Tropics is delivering under this program are Climate-Resilient Rangelands, and Climate-Ready Coastlines.
