Streambank rehabilitation to restore land function and prevent further flood damage
The Logan Creek Streambank Rehabilitation Project successfully restored land health and function, reducing the risk of future flood damage and protecting downstream waterways, including the Great Barrier Reef, from sediment runoff.
Funded by the Queensland Government through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the project responded to the record-breaking Central, Southern and Western Queensland rainfall and flooding event of 10 November – 3 December 2021.
Delivered along Logan Creek, a tributary of the Burdekin River west of Moranbah, the project rehabilitated five actively eroding streambank sites across three grazing properties in the southern Burdekin catchment. The area is predominantly used for grazing on native pastures and is characterised by cracking clay vertisol soils, which are highly susceptible to waterlogging and erosion.
NQ Dry Tropics partnered with Alluvium Consulting to deliver the project, with technical guidance from Verterra Ecological Engineering and works undertaken by local contractors.
Across 1,566 metres of streambank, steep, unstable banks were reshaped to a more stable profile to reduce erosion risk. Fencing was installed to protect rehabilitation areas from grazing, while locally sourced native seed mixes were used to revegetate the sites. Fallen timber already on-site was reused as natural reinforcement, minimising the need to import construction materials.
A monitoring program was established to assess streambank stability and vegetation establishment following rehabilitation works. Located within the Brigalow Belt Bioregion, the rehabilitation area supports significant remnant riparian ecosystems, including Brigalow and other vegetation communities containing species such as Eucalyptus, Astrebla spp. and Acacia.
