Regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations across Queensland are building their readiness to support early detection and response efforts for H5 bird flu through training, surveillance and emergency preparedness activities.
Delivered by NRM Regions Queensland through the Queensland Government’s Biosecurity Boost Grants Program, a statewide workshop brought together NRM staff and biosecurity experts to build skills in wildlife disease surveillance, recognising signs of H5 bird flu, safely recording observations and reporting suspected cases.
While NRM staff do not diagnose or manage disease outbreaks, they play an important role in supporting Australia’s Emergency Animal Disease Framework through their connection with landscapes, communities and wildlife.
The workshop included expert advice from Biosecurity Queensland, Wildlife Health Australia, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, with Queensland Minister for Primary Industries Tony Perrett recognising the sector’s contribution to Queensland’s bird flu surveillance efforts.
