Training helps field officers record vegetation condition data for a range of applications
Members of the NQ Dry Tropics team immersed themselves in all things vegetation with NRM Queensland presenter Penny Scott, who delivered an insightful training on the Vegetation Condition Assessment Tool (VegCAT).
VegCAT is used to collect data on vegetation structural condition and is a rapid approach to assessing changes within project areas.
It is part of NRM Queensland’s State-wide Indicators Framework (SWIF), which provides NRM organisations with standard tools and methods for collecting data demonstrating the impact of their work.
Data collected feeds into the SWIF Dashboard to show the impact made State-wide by NRM organisations.
The one-day workshop triggered interesting discussions, as members of the group worked to understand how the tool could be used to support a range of NQ Dry Tropics’ projects from Cultural fire to protecting biodiversity and grazing land management.
Following a morning of classroom theory, the team ventured out to Pallarenda to put VegCAT into practice.
The app helps field officers work through the necessary steps and record data. Each team member measured their VegCAT plot and recorded observations of the vegetation around them, including canopy cover, ground cover, new trees shooting up, weeds and animal soil disturbance.
