Building capacity for on Country weed management
NQ Dry Tropics has been awarded a contract to monitor and maintain sites previously delivered under the Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements across the Burdekin Reef catchment.
A key focus of this work is building capacity among Indigenous-owned and operated businesses, strengthening regional Traditional Owner capacity for ongoing land management and helping maintain the health and resilience of local ecosystems.
These businesses are carrying out maintenance and weed management activities on Country.
Three sites have been identified for mechanical and chemical treatment of invasive weeds to protect ecosystem health and maintain the long-term benefits of previous restoration works:
- Molongle Creek (Juru Country) – delivered by Narburra Water Services.
- Majors Creek (Bindal Country) – delivered by Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation.
- Two Mile Creek – delivered by Narburra Water Services.
The project combines on-ground weed intervention with on-the-job training in areas such as:
- Chemical and mechanical weed control.
- Workplace health and safety.
- Weed and plant identification.
The Riverine Site Maintenance Program is funded by the Australian Government under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
