NQ Dry Tropics has always been a host company
NQ Dry Tropics has been a proud host organisation of the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) Agricultural Extension Work Placement Program (AEWPP) since its inception.
This program connects early career extension professionals with host agribusinesses or natural resource management organisations to assist landholders to implement best practices in the Great Barrier Reef catchment.

For the past year we had the pleasure of hosting Claire Cornel, pictured, who holds a Bachelor of Ag Science from the University of Queensland, and a Cert III in Production Horticulture.
As part of the program, QFF organises a bus trip to show early career extension officers different extension practices in reef catchments. They also get to hear directly from farmers who have tried various practices to improve productivity, sustainability and environmental outcomes.
Claire, along with NQ Dry Tropics Senior Grazing Extension Officer Brad Martin, hosted the Burdekin region leg of the tour. They visited Mt Pleasant Station with graziers Jamie Gordon and Garlone Moulin to learn about the grazing land management approach used on the property, and their journey of making changes to their practices.
The goal of the extension work placement program is to help build extension delivery organisations in the reef catchment. It offers early career extension officers a tailored training program to develop core skills, so they can confidently engage with landholders, learn technical farming information and use technology to support farming improvements.
Participants gain hands-on experience, a solid understanding of the agricultural and land management sector and knowledge of sustainable farm management practices.
