NQ Dry Tropics Traditional Owner Management Group Cultural Fire Management for Grazing Landscapes project is hosting a regional workshop for Traditional Owners and graziers to share knowledge about cultural fire practices and sustainable land management.

The two-day workshop is being held on organic cattle property Jervoise Station, near Greenvale, on Gugu Badhun Country. The property is a demonstration site for cultural fire management in the grazing landscape, overseen by Firesticks Alliance Lead Fire Practitioner, Dr Victor Steffensen.

Victor bases workshops on his extensive traditional cultural and ecological knowledge, which enables him to read Country together with the local Traditional Owners and property owners, to understand the condition of a landscape, and determine how to restore balance through cultural burning.

There will also be input from Ranger groups and other Firesticks practitioners about traditional land management activities. Attendees will also hear from graziers about what they have learned about cultural fire management through the project.

The aim of the Cultural Fire Management for Grazing Landscapes project is to revitalise ancient cultural fire management practices among Traditional Owners in the Dry Tropics region, while strengthening their relationships with graziers as they work together to heal Country, and land management.

The project is funded through WWF-Australia’s Indigenous Fire Management Program.

The workshop is being held on 22-23 May and there are limited spaces available.

If you’re interested in attending this workshop, and for further information, contact our office on 4799 3500 or info@nqdrytropics.com.au.
